Popularment, es conta que el nom de la localitat prové de la contracció de "sa illa", en castellà "l'illa", nom que li donarien els primigenis pobladors (en català antic era freqüent l'ús de l'article salat), a l'estar assentada l'alqueria originàriament un istme sobre l'Albufera de València. Silla. Popularmente, se cuenta que el nombre de la localidad proviene de la contracción de "sa illa", en castellano "la isla", nombre que le darían los primigenios pobladores (en catalán antiguo era frecuente el uso del artículo salado), al estar asentada la alquería originalmente un istmo sobre la Albufera de Valencia.
