I was on Indianapolis Boulevard, just about to cross the Illinois State line into Indiana, and the Chicago City line into Hammond. I was on my way to Wolf Lake to fish for the walleyes that herd shad up into the shallows on rainy, blustery October nights. ~ View On Black But, as I drove, I simply had to get some shots. I usually listened to them whenever I was in the car, but especially at night, and most especially on rainy or snowy nights. Driving at night, in the rain, with jazz on, in a big, safe, cozy car? Street lights and neon signs sparkled and danced across dark, rain-drenched puddles on the roadway. White lane-lines flashed by in the glow of my headlights to the snap of one’s fingers; One-Two, Three-Four! Yeah, I was dancing a bit. Jack DeJohnette’s crisp stick-work tappings on the high-hat and punctuations on the snare drum will do that to a person. Perhaps you need to hear it - in the rain, at night, in the car – to feel me.
