Description:
Striper (striped bass) 37 inches Boston Harbor Submitted for the PCA assignment: "Breaking the rules" PCA39 WIT: Rules broken: A) Saltwater is hazardous to camera equipment: Rule #1 for me is to only bring my oldest digital camera on my fishing trips. But, I brought my newest one. B) Rule #2 for me: Never change lenses while on the boat: Well ..I changed lenses and put on my fisheye. C: 3rd rule: Keep my horizons level: The horizon here is obviously slanted. I think this is my first ever picture with a "knowingly " slanted horizon.. D. I submitted this to 2 groups previously..sorry. I couldnt wait. Thats breaking a pca rule.

Great shot. You broke all the rules and each "break" paid off. It's just a guy holding a fish yet it's SO original!

Another one that is just great in every way. The tilting is really making this shot more interesting. Congrats on getting this chosen to Getty too.

Fantastic shot, I love the whole thing. But.... how'd it taste?

mattpevear says :18/Sep/2008 21:20:52
Being that i have only one camera, I would not follow the rule to bring your oldest dslr with you. Also, breaking the rule of changing to your fisheye was a great idea, realy emphasizes the length of the fish awesmoe

pictureguy89 says :18/Sep/2008 12:45:43
Great PIcture. The story behind it sounds a little fishy to me though... (just kidding).

PCA39 Huge fish, great photo. The only rule that I can see you broke was submitting it to other groups first. Always use the best equipment for the job. The fisheye was perfect for the fish shot. The slanted horizon enhances the photo by giving it a sense of immediacy, movement and drama.

MadPhotos1 says :16/Sep/2008 23:59:33
That fish is huge!!!!! And how ironic that it is take with a fish eye lens! (which I feel totally works!) Definitely has rules broken but they really don't bother me! My eyes are way more occupied with gauging the size of that fish!! Great Entry!!!

evanleavitt says :16/Sep/2008 14:13:43
Love this Garrey! Awesome shot.

garreyf says :16/Sep/2008 11:19:10
Thanks guys. Katachthonios..thanks..Im glad I reeled you in. Looks forward to more of your pics and some fishing pics too :)

katachthonios says :16/Sep/2008 10:24:10
PCA Well I don't know of much to add to my above (non-PCA) comment, except to say that I originally found the image (and, as a result, the PCAs) by looking for "fishing" as a tag and even the thumbnail leapt off of the page at me. It keeps that magazine "look at my big fish" aesthetic and magnifies it with an artistic flair. The image has huge impact, even if I can't completely put a finger on why...

bowtoo says :15/Sep/2008 23:29:29
Garrey, in my opinion, this is a competition winner. It is definitely my pick for this assignment. i had a look at all the photographs yesterday and this one leapt out at me (a) because it breaks some of the rules in a way that ADDS to the image impact and quality and (b) because it really reminded me of the bold, bragging photos in fishing magazines. Excellent image, idea and submission for this assignment. Print it large and give it to your BIL to hang up in his office! Did you take the waterproof bag?

garreyf says :15/Sep/2008 21:33:02
Thanks everyone. One week before this photo was shot, my broinlaw (BIL) was telling me that I should try for some fishing mags. He studies all the northeast fishing mags and noted that we should try to do such a thing. So, he emailed me about 4 web links to the most prolific fishing photographers and I quickly studied them. I was happy to see some fisheye shots. So, that was my plan for this day. I also had a plan to use my off camera flash with my pocket wizards before the sun came up..however, the few shots taken were recycle bin worthy. This is not HDR. I used a Nik tonal contrast filter (a plugin for photoshop) to get the contrast. A byproduct of this filter is an HDR like feel. Nik calls it a poor mans HDR. Thanks :)

nadege34 says :15/Sep/2008 20:44:12
PCA An amazing shot garreyf ,the voluntary tilt just add to the at sea on an unstable boat feeling. I also love the colors,is it HDR? How brave to bring your nice equipment! and what a big fish, did you guys eat it? PS:I think your brother in law is right about your fishing picture, you can definitely submit them to fishing magazines.

Farkled says :15/Sep/2008 20:02:34
PCA As usual, Summerspot nailed it: Why the tilt works. It gets like that when it's sloppy out. Out on the left coast, we don't do inches, we do pounds (not even kilograms). I'm guessing that the fish goes maybe 25 lbs. Difficult to tell with the distortion, but it's a nice fat bass. So a 54 lb unit come in off the rocks on a NJ inlet. Guy was fishing a live eel, no weight. Tail slapped on the rocks as the guy hauled it back to shore. It was the largest striper of the year. I think your BIL should charge you modeling fees. Echo Steve's comment: What'd he get it on? Oh, BTW, love the shot! P.S. - you nned to submit this to the local fishing mags and blogs, etc.

Cynmat says :15/Sep/2008 15:49:26
PCA Totally awesome capture. That must have been fun reeling in :)

summerspot says :15/Sep/2008 14:36:47
I can only echo the positive comments (including my own). :) Since the lens distorts anyway, the tilt fits right in. Plus it adds to the "being at sea" feel. Great strong colors. Excellent submission!

milazzy says :15/Sep/2008 09:02:20
Even though this is taken at a titled angle, Which for me seems like the only rule broken, I think this picture is great, the colors in the background are amazing, it looks HDR, is it? That's one big fish you caught there, and this spur of the moment picture and the look on your face only make it better. The only fish i ever caught was the size of my hand, lol. Good Job on this one.

Jeff Engelhardt says :15/Sep/2008 00:32:24
First and foremost, I love that you broke the rule of the group for which this picture was supposedly taken. That's a very high-level, strategic form of rule breaking (and there I was just trying to shoot wide open! such a small thinker!). Wow, this photo just screams - distortion! Falling out of frame! Half the man's face lost in shadows! YET, it is just gripping. visually stunning. Well done!

Fastball95 says :14/Sep/2008 18:54:21
PCA Personal rule breaking was allowed in the assignment and you sure broke a few here. (and I bet you gave that camera a good cleaning too). The tilted horizon really works, I cant figure out what it would look like without the tilt. so great job, the fish eye was one heck of a choice for a big fish photo. (did he catch it on a fly?) You sure get some great light out there on water that early plus that nik software really helps as well. Great job, you broke the rules and something needs to hang in the den here, either the fish or the photo!

Pockets1 says :14/Sep/2008 16:04:23
pca firstly what a bloody great fish, looks like he is struggling to old that beast up. what did that thing weigh and how long did it feed the family ?? the shot is great from fisheye to expression and detail to colour. The rules seem personal more that technical but one could argue all rules are that way. Great shot, just goes to show you should not follow rules :-)

Grewy says :14/Sep/2008 15:14:56
pca thats a great pic. the curved horizon sloping to the left works well

Donald Holland says :14/Sep/2008 12:49:18
That is one incredible fish! I think bringing your nicest camera and changing lenses on the boat are probably the bravest rule breakers I have heard.

Rich Baldonado says :6/Sep/2008 00:29:41
DUDE!! That is badass! ........... and the fish is nice too!

MsLark says :5/Sep/2008 00:13:04
This photo speaks volumes....like the fisheye lens! That fish would feed 10 families for a year!

Chrissy Smiles says :3/Sep/2008 23:30:10
Awesome photo. The colors are so vibrant! Also excellent detail throughout the entire photo; the fish ,the water, the fisherman. Also love the creative flair you have accomplished with the fish eye lens. Great eye!!!!

Wow, that is a cool shot. I like everything about it.

aaronstrout says :3/Sep/2008 20:27:41
Garrey - not only is that an amazing "fish picture", the perspective in your shot is perfect. Great shot of the clouds in the background too.

cmmsurfcaster says :3/Sep/2008 17:21:17
The fish WAS heavy. Awesome picture Garrey

Koen Verlinden says :3/Sep/2008 17:02:35
What a shot... Couldn't think of anything to make it better!

Cynmat says :3/Sep/2008 13:30:50
Love it. Cool perspective. What a huge fish. That must have been work reeling it in.

summerspot says :2/Sep/2008 23:50:52
Very cool, great choice of lens, super pp!
