The weirdest thing has happened in the last few days. I’ve had a lot of views and faves due to the great fortune of being placed at number one in the explore pages. Now I'm very flattered and honoured to be given such a high accolade, but at the same time disturbed at my own behaviour as a result. I have let my insecure self take the better of me and get drawn in by the hype. Please don’t get me wrong, I'm not criticising the system but instead myself! I have been tempted to value the hits and faves and have become obsessed by their frequency. Its very weird I find myself in a paradox, I want the wider attention that it brings, in order to forge my artistic path but I also want deeper more meaningful communication with people in order to develop. The two don’t seem to fit into the same place.
I don’t mean to rant, honestly I'm honoured by the attention, but I want to get a grip of my insecure ego before I turn into the kind of person I despise.
Anyway ill push off now and get the sleep that a bottle of wine and a curry are demanding from me. I'll be sobering up tomorrow! Cheers Jason
Ps. this is polpero again, fantastic moonscape location. I must go back with the tripod and more time, the ndgraduated filter and shallow dof, doesn’t do this place justice.
Another comment and another fave to add to your list, I decided to just pick one so as to keep the hype in check. Amazing photos, beautiful landscapes!
Ah yes....the paradox of our emotions. Hard to grasp....what we desire as opposed to what makes us happy. A fabulous shot, J.
As a postscript...I used the word "paradox" before I actually saw the title you gave to this photo...hmmmmm...coincidence?
Explore is a weird and dominating beastie, acknowledge it's there, but don't let it push you around. That's my pathetic advice.. to thine own self be true and all that, as long as you love what you are doing, that is the most important thing. I got to hate one of my explore pics as i knew I could do better but didn't have the courage to pull the pic!
Keep hold of your insecurities. Creatively, they are a powerful driving force.
On the other hand, these shots are godlike : D

Congrats on the "Explore", Jason .... but remember that with fame comes responsibility ... and your public will now expect more of you ! ;-)
And, oh ... this is a really nice image ... good work !!
It's a gorgeous looking place Jason and you have captured that beauty perfectly, I love the foreground detail.
Congratulations on the explore exposure, you deserve it but I understand how you feel.

Wow, this photo kicks ass! It has so many cool elements and they all balance each other perfectly. Very nicely done!

I know exactly what you mean, Jason. We are of the same spirit - publicity and comments are nice, but we should never forget, who we are, and what is really important to us and our photography.
So i make two kinds of images: One for showing to the public ... and then i also try to make some good images... ;-))
Thank's for your honest thoughts. In vino veritas!
Best regards, my friend.
Wonderful image Jason. I would not criticize yourself too harshly, I think this is a common struggle, the balance between drawing and receiving attention for one's work and how it affects our ego, or in some cases our fear of getting carried away with the attention and losing our humility. Sort of like becoming a rock star. ;-) It is a double edged sword, you want people to see your work, to be able to share it, to trade inspiration for introspection. But at the same time it is dangerously easy to lose touch with our humble beginnings, to get swept up in the hype, or maybe if not swept up, nudged in an unwanted direction just slightly.
I guess my advice Jason is enjoy the attention your photography is gaining you, and rest assured that it is well deserved. You maintain a very creative stream and the accolades it draws are hard earned (except for the beer mug sunset, not sure if that qualifies as "hard-earned" :-p). But keep your limits in mind, because spreading popularity and "meaningful communication" do not always go together. Stay within your limits as they allow, and give yourself a pat on the back.
I have met many photographers who have grown smug or arrogant in their abilities, and talented or not, they can be tiresome. But at the same time, I have known many many photographers who are photographic geniuses, but adamantly refuse to acknowledge anything remotely resembling praise of their work, and that is also unjust. Find your happy medium and just keep shooting!
Congratulations!

Hi Jason - another quality shot - I like the simplicity you are achieving - I want to do the same, but haven't got on the right track yet - still getting to grips with the 5D. Hope this does well for you.
Nice lead-in, like the rocky outcrop - a bit of balance with the tree. Interest in the water, and good tones. Might be tempted to pick out a lighter spot near the top of the rock to link in with the foreground
